POWER FROM
A COATED INTAKE

From Doug at Process Coating, Mi.

Doug coated an intake for a BB Chevy for an Offshore Racing application. The boat is "Grumpy Old Men" and won the Great Lakes Championship. The intake was coated with TLLB on the bottom, TLTD on the top and a combination of TLLB over sprayed with TLML in the runners. What were the results from the application of theses coatings only? The owner indicated over 20 H.P.

GENERAL RULE OF THUMB
FOR DRY FILM LUBRICANTS

The following guide will help determine how many and which surfaces to coat.

  • Coat the softer of two mating surfaces first. As an example coat Rod and Main bearings before coating crank journals.

  • Coat the greater of the two swept surfaces. You would coat the cylinder walls before coating the rings.

  • The greatest amount of friction reduction occurs when one surface is coated and wear life increases significantly. Coating the mating surface does not normally reduce the friction by any significant amount but wear life increases even more.

This is only a general guide but should help in determining what parts to coat.

YZ80 Motocross application

From Brad at
Finish Line High Performance Coatings, OH

Brad's customer, J. P. Cycles in Lisbon, OH informed Brad that while he would normally see about 10 hours of life out of the pistons he runs, the piston coated by Brad has over 70 hours of service. He has replaced the rings several times and the piston is still good, showing virtually no scuffing or wear on the piston or cylinder. The piston was coated with CBX on top and TLML on the skirts. In addition cylinder temperature was reduced by 20 degrees.

ENGINEMASTERS.COM

Tech Line Coatings, Inc. is now a contingent sponsor for the Engine Masters contest. This contest put on by Popular HotRodding Magazine is garnering a great deal of attention. The use of coatings in the engines being built for this competition is virtually total. The series is being given a great deal of attention in the magazine as well as on the web site listed above. Use this information to generate more internal engine coating business.

SPEEDWAY ILLUSTRATED

The May 2003 issue has an article on "Port Volume" written by David Vizard. On pages 79 and 84 a photo of a combustion chamber appears. On page 84 it notes that it is a Coated unit. Coatings are becoming common enough that no special mention is made of them. This is a further indication as to the trend towards more and more internal engine coating taking place. Keep you eye open for details such as this as it helps convince the few unbelievers remaining, of the error of their ways.
